Clinical Observation on Joong Poong


Abstract
Clinical observations were done- on 461 cases of Joong Poong (Cerebrovascular Accidents) treated at Oriental Medical Hospital in Kyung ¢¥Hee University from Jan. 1983 to Dec. 1984.
The following results have been obtained:
1) Among the 461 cases of Joong Poong (Cerebrovascular Accidents), cerebral hemorrhage was noted in 64.51%, subarachnoid hemorrhage in 4.34%, cerebral thrombosis in 20.39%, cerebral embolism in 8.68%, and transient ischemic attack in 1.08%.
2) The ratio between males and females was 1:1.28 in whole groups of Joong Poong, and in age distribution, fifties was the top as 33.62% and sixties, forties, and seventies were in order of frequency.
3) Among the preceding diseases at the onset of Joong Poong, hypertention was noted in 66.08%, and diabetes mellitus in 24.01%.
4) There were a large number of recurrent cases. The first attack was noted in 70.83%, the 2nd attack in 24.78%, more than 3rd attack in 4.39%.
5) More protean complications were observed in the studies; Gastrointestinal bleeding was noted in 32.88%, pneumonia in 26.17%, urinary tract infection in 21.23%,
and bed sore in 21.23%.
6) Electrocardiography findings were as follows: The normal was noted in 21.99%, left ventricular strain in 22.25%, and left ventricular hypertrophy in 17.54%.
7) In the relation between consciousness and prognosis, the mortality in full coma (disappearance of light reflex, both pupillary dilatation) was 100%, and the prognosis was good according to the degree of the clearness of consciousness.
8) The over-all mortality rate of Joong Poong was 40.56%, and 50.33% of them was dead in cerebral hemorrhage, 25.0% in subarachnoid hemorrhage, 27.5% in cerebral embolism, 20.21% in cerebral thrombosis.
9) Reviewing of the admission period in the expired cases, it was within 1 week in 77.54%.
10) About the over-all admission period, 36.4% was within a week, 20.39% within 1-2 weeks, 18.86% within 2-4 weeks, hence 75.65% had been treated for 4 weeks.
11) The prescriptions used in many cases of Joong Poong were Sopoongtang, Dodam tang, Chungsimyungjatang, Chungpesagantang.
