In order to study the effects of Keumchooltang, reputed to be the effective for the remedy of threatened abortion, experiments regarding the antiabortive effect of Keumchooltang on the pregnant rats and the effect of it on the uterine smooth muscle strips of nonpregnant rats were carried out.
Results were as follows:
1. The drug administered on the uterine strips of nonpregnant rats caused the effect of uterine relaxation in proportion to concentration of the drug.
2. The drug administered on the uterine contraction induced by oxytocin or prostaglandin F2aof nonpregnant rats caused the effect of uterine relaxation in pro-portion to concentration of the drug.
3. The antiabortive effect of the drug was significantly increased in proportion to the amount administered when compared with that of control group.
The effect of extracted powder and mixture of each extracted powder was nearly the same.
According to the above result, it can be concluded that the Keumchooltang, generally used for the treatment of threatened abortion, had a remarkable effect on the antiabortion and the relaxation of uterus.
