A Study on the Contents of Medicine of the Old Cho-sung Age
Kim Jong-Yeol

Abstract
Observing the contents of medicine of the old cho-sung age, as it¢¥s told in Sam-kugu-sa. (~ a ) with an emphasis on Dan gun (If R) myth, I obtained the following results.
1.By the record that `Han-ung (1 ift) ruled over diseases¢¥, the Dan gun myth includes the early details of primitive Korean medicine and also considers Hanung as the originator of Korean mecicine.
2.As its told in the myth, Han-ung brought the thrith chenbuin ( vp), but in general meaning thrith chen-bu-in means mirror, bell and knife. Being one of the three professions of the ancient shanunanists the prevention of diseases and cure of the old cho-sun age depended on the persons who had the medicine shamman ( &) also during this process we may presume that surgical instruments like knives were also used.
3.The numbers (=, -1, "ff ) represented in the 3 taboos of thirth chen-bu-in, three-seventh days taboo E), Not see one hundred days of sun right Os- ytq) etcs, represents the birth of life, the recuperation, prevention and diseases of the body. The numbers (, -f-) represented in the q and ; +tCcan be translated as the quantity of medicine that was needed to cure. Because of these reasons, we presume that the numbers found in Dangun myth has a relation with the early medicine.
4. Hanung, while commanding over the wind, rain and clouds, he managed over the welfare of humans. So that the people who lived in that period of time, through observing the changes of nature that came as wind, cloud and rain determined the out-breaks of diseases and the inter-relation among them.
Through these observations, they could prevent the diseases that came after drastic changes of weather or climate.
5,. Through the arcient documertary records we can observe that in the old cho-sun territory, there were special ways of naming the diseases and the use of acupuncture and moxibustion existed.
And they were favored with a furtile land. Through the usage of mugwort and garlic in the Dangun myth, we presume that the knowledge, the use of acupuncture and moxibustion and the cultivation and use of medicinal herbs to prevent diseases existed.
6. In the myth, there were the contents about supplicating to be a human, to be a mother and other prohibitions.
That was the ways of prohibitive warning and praying methods when the people of the old cho-sun age wanted to prevent the diseases and catastrophes.
7. A bear and a tiger wanted to be human. And through the use of mugwort and garlic (miraculous medicine) only one of them-bear-could become human.
In Taoism, the use of l and miraculous medicine (mugwort, garlic) led to immortality and freed from all kinds of diseases ( 4J.
Observing through all this data, we suppose that the use of mugwort and garlic was considered as remedies with miraculous curative powers in the old cho-sun age.
