Abstract
Today we have many products of tooth-brushes, dentifrices and supplemental oral hygiene devices in Korea. Therefore, both dentists and dental hygienists have been confused to choose the most appropriate oral hygiene device for their patients. Tooth-brushes, dentifrices and supplemental oral hygiene devices are recommended to each patient considering many factors such as patient's age, oral conditions, tooth-brushing methods, plaque index, caries and periodontal status, cervical abrasion, the kind of dental appliance, etc. On the other hand, tooth-brushes are classified according to their head size, numbers of bristle in a tuft, numbers of tufts in a brush-head, bristle height, bristle diameter, size and shape of brush handle, etc. And dentifrices are divided by degree of abrasiveness, the kinds of flavoring or drugging agents. The other supplemental oral hygiene devices are developed by means of their own purpose to each dental patients. It is not easy to match various factors of tooth-brushes, dentifrices and the supplemental oral hygiene devices and to prescribe them to each patient who has various oral status, for promoting dental health most appropriately. We first input individual characteristics of each oral hygiene devices and then we either ask questions to patients or perform oral examination. Therefore we could obtain data which can be utilized in selecting the most suitable oral hygiene device for each patient. 70 patients, age of twenty, have been examined clinically and divided into 2 groups, 35 of control and the other 35 of experimental. After plaque indices were checked from each patient, for controlling the dental plaque, control group were educated through the tutorial method with instructor's own knowledges for oral hygiene devices and method, whereas the patient of experimental group were educated through the tutorial method utilizing personal computer which was programed to select the appropriate personalized tooth-brushing methods, tooth-brushes, dentifrices and other supplemental oral hygiene measures. Thereafter, plaque indices were repeatedly checked from patients of both group at an interval of 1 week for 4 times. Obtained results showed that the patient of dental health education utilizing personal-computer as an instructional and guidance media was more effective in improving the oral hygiene condition. Although the regression of the educational effect could not be prevented perfectly, utilization of personal computer were recommended to select ideal oral hygiene devices for each patients.
