Effect of NSAIDs (Ibuprofen) of the Healing and Remodeling of Bone and Articular Cartilage in the Rabbit Temporomandibular Joint

Abstract
The purpose of this experiments was to study the effect of NSAIDs on the healing and remodeling of bone and cartilage in the temporonmandibular joint of the rabbits.
Fifteen rabbits were operated to create a groove and a hole in the articular surface of both the right and the left mandibular condyles.
After surgery, operated animals were divided into three groups. Group A (5 rabbits) which did not take any medication was control group. Group B (5 rabbits) was given a daily dose of 17.0 mg/kg of ibuprofen. Group C (5 rabbits) was given a daily
dose of
34.0 mg/kg of ibuprofen. Animals were killed on post-operative 1, 3 days, 1, 2 and 4 weeks. The 30 condyles were examined radiographically and histo logically.
@ES The results were as follows :
@EN 1. There was no significant difference between two medication groups.
2. Granulation tissue, osteoid tissue and trabecular pattern formation appeared on post-operative 1 week and osteoblasts activity was less active than the control group.
3. The infiltration of inflammatory cells decreased at the 3 rd day and could not find them at two weeks.
4. The degree of bony sclerosing effect was less than the control group by means of soft X-ray.
