Clinical dental plaque measurement by image processing analysis





Abstract
The propose of this study was to develop new simplify computerized planimetric method (Chonnam Pro.) by personal computer. Also, promote the personal oral hygine and dental health by using of computerized image analysis system. Percent index expresses plaque area as a percentage of tooth area. The plaque area and tooth ares on color images were digitized and the number of pixels automatically counted. The association of the Quigley-Hein plaque index, debris index of oral hygine index by green & Vermillion and the was computerized planimetric method assessed by Spearman correlation.
For the facial surfaces of an anterior teeth, the image were photographed, and the Q-H index and the debris index of oral hygine index by green & Vermillion were scored by same examiner. Chonnam Pro. revealed strongly positive correlation with Image Pro¢ç at pre-brushing (r = 0.82, P (0.01) and post brushing (r = 0.97, P (0.01). And Chonnam Pro, revealed positive correlation with Q-H index at pre brushing (r = 0.73, P(0.01) and post-brushing (r = 0.68, P(0.01), and positive correlation with debris index of oral hygine index by green & Vermillion at pre-brushing (r 0.75, P (O.01) and post-brushing (r = 0.62, P (O.01).
This study indicates that the proposed Chonnam Pro, of quantitatively express has high discriminative power.
