A survey on family dental health behavior in Seoul capital city




Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the actual state of family dental health behavior among residents in Seoul and to collect the baseline data for developing appropriate educational objectives to improve family dental health. A questionaire consisting of 17 items was used to personally interview 1,220 residents in Seoul. A quota sampling method was used.
The obtained results were as follows:
1. 99.3% of citizens brushed their teeth one or more times a day, except for a toothpick, very few citizens used floss silk or a proxabrush, daily at home.
2. The major oral diseases that citizens had concerned for family dental care were dental caries and periodontal disease.
3. Average toothbrushing frequency at home was 2.04 times a day, but 40.7% of citizens brushed their
teeth before breakfast and very few citizens brushed their teeth after between-meal at home.
4. Only 39.0% of citizens reported using fluoride containing dentifrice at home.
5. Average food intake frequency per day at home was 3.2 times and average cariogenic food intake
frequency per day at home 0.9 times. So, it was not seemed to practice diet control for priventing dental
caries at home.
6. It was recommended that objectives, contents and method of dental health education about family dental health must be renovated.
7. Incremental dental care had been supplyed for only 24.9% of citizens, and 69.3% of citizens visited a dental clinic in their community. Therefore, it was concluded that dental education must be developed in dental school for the general, dentist to play a pivotal role in developing dental care delivery system
and incremental dental care.
