Effect of Panax ginseng, Platycodon grandflorum, and INH on lipid metabolism of rabbit during long term cholesterol administration

Abstract
Rabbits were used as experimental animals throughout this study. Rabbits were divided into 4 groups consisting_ of 10 animals each group. All animals were fed standard diet plus 250 mg cholesterol per kg body weight. y
I. Cholesterol fed group(control added.
2. Ginseng fed group: Rabbits kg body weight.
3. Platycodon grandflorum fed group: Rabbits fed cholesterol plus 250 mg Platycodon gr. powder per kg body weight.
4. Isonicotinic acid hydrazid(INH) fed group: Rabbits fed cholesterol added by 20 mg INH per kg body weight.
Serum cholesterol, phospholipid and triglyceride levels were determined during the experimental period of 70 days. Animals were sacrificed at 70 th day for the analysis of hepatic lipid components and for histological study of hepatic tissue and aorta-wall.
The following results were obtained.
1. Serum total cholesterol levels were. rapidly increased in all groups following administration of cholesterol. The most remarkable increase was observed in INH fed group. Ginseng and Platycodon gr. fed groups were shown a rise in serum cholesterol level to lesser extent than that of control group.
2. Serum phospholipid content in control group was increased considerably by 4th week and plateaued by 8 th week, and rapidly decreased thereafter with the appea-
group Rabbits received ration with cholesterol given cholesterol plus 250 mg ginseng powder per
