Effect of Starvation on Water and Electrolyte Distribution in Various Rabbit Tissue.

Abstract
This experimental study was under-taken to observe the changes of water and electrolyte distribution in various tissue due to starvation which often encountered at clinic-
Sixty rabbits were divided into three groups as following:
group 1: control, twenty rabbits
group 2: starvation for three days, twenty rabbits
group 3: starvation for six days, twenty rabbits
Each rabbit of above three groups was depleted blood
by cardiac puncture, then they were sacrificed immedia-
tely and liver, kidney, skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle
and small intestine were collected to determine the con-
tents of water, sodium, potassium and chloride. Also ex-
tracellular space and _total sodium plus potassium in tissue were calculated.
The results of this investigation were as follows:
1) In the starvated group, contents of serum sodium and chloride were definitely decreased, while the changes of potassium were not significant.
2) In the liver tissue, content of water slightly in-creased, also sodium, sodium space, chloride and chloride space were remarkably increased, but potassium were relatively decreased thus total amount of sodium plus potassium were not changed definitely because increasing sodium and decreasing potassium were antagonized each other,
3) In the kidney tissue, no changes were detected on contents of water although sodium and sodium space, chloride and chloride space were surprisingly increased but potassium were not changed.
4) In the skeletal muscle tissue, the contents of sodium, sodium space were increased, also there was a double
