The Studies of Oxygen Related Enzyme on the Organic Solvent Exposed in Rats
Lee Young-Ja

Abstract
Benzene and toluene have been widely used in the industrial field as an organic solvent. It has been known that the central nerve system, circulatory system and the liver can be damaged as a result of the absorption of these materials into human body. Also it was observed that the blood control system of the bone marrow is meaningfully effected when human body is instantly or periodically exposed into benzene having the basic structure of toluene. Lately, the use of toluene and benzene is gradually increasing, The changes of the oxygen-related enzymes in the liver and the brain of rats exposed into benzene and toluene (10,000ppm/10min./5days) were summerized as follows : 1. In the liver of the group exposed into benzene, it shows an meaningful increase in superoxide dismutase with 99% significance. Other enzymes show only silght changes, which are not significant changes. 2. In the liver of the group exposed into toluene, hydrogen peroxide shows an meaningful increase in 99%, but Mn-superoxide dismutase is meaningfully decreased with the same rate. Glutathione peroxidase shows meaningful decrease in 95%, but other components don`t show any significant changes. 3. In the brain of the group exposed into benzene, catalase is meaningfully decreased with 99%, but xanthine oxidase and glutathione peroxidase show an meaningful increase in the same rate. Superoxide radical and Cu, Zn-superoxide dismutase show an meaningful decrease in 95%. 4. In the brain of the group exposed into toluene, catalase is meaningfully decreased with 99%, but xanthine oxidase and glutathione peroxidase are meaningfully increased with the same rate. In superoxide radical it shows an meaningful-decrease in 95%. The above results show that the exposure into the organic solvents, benzene and toluene is affected in the brain but less in the liver. Even though toluene is gradually replaced by benzene due to its toxicity, the results of the experiments show the similar effects on the changes of the oxygen-related enzymes concerning with groups exposed into benzene and toluene.
