Lee Hyuk-Jin

Abstract
The leisure time is growing as the result of rapid economic growth in Korea and there are rapid changes how people spend their leisure time. As the counteractive result of the rapid growth of cities in modern society, severe pollution problems have occurred and urban residents are more in hunger for clean air and natural forests. Recreational forest areas are for public health care and rest to promote national welfare as public use of forest resouces in addition to existing forest management. Spending time in recreational forests is highly recommendable activities for many people and their demands for these places are growing rapidly. The purpose of this study is to analyze overall characteristics of recreational forests in Korea by examining the development process, the institutional backgrounds and the distributions of recreational forests. Literature review has been used for the study. The major findings of this study are summarized as follows. First, recreational forests are distributed at 58 regional places, and the space covers an area of about 80,010ha. Recreational forests will be classified 3 kinds, nationalized, public-owned and private forest according to the right of ownership. Second, as a result of analysis of geographical location, distribution pattern of site is closely with position of forest area near a chain of mountains in Korea. Third, as for the number of recreational forests in each¡¯ Administrative Unit¡¯, Kangwon is the most plentiful one and it is followed by Ch¡¯ungnam, Kyongbuk, Kyongnam, Chonnam and Chonbuk. In regard to distribution by an area, Kyongbuk and Kangwon occupy 86% of all. Fourth, as for changes for 9years(I988~1996), the ratio of the number and area of privated forests has been increased gradually since 1991. Based on the results of the study, the following suggestions can be made for future study in Tourism and Tourism Geography: First, One is the necessity of many studies on the analysis of geographical location on human and physical landscapes as tourist attractions and on the analysis of tourist¡¯s travel behavior and leisure pattern by using questionnaire method. The other is that it is needed to analyze impacts of recreational forest as tourism resource on economic, sociocultural and physical environment.
