A clinical study of 76 cases of thyroid nodules


Abstract
This report is a clinical study of 76 cases of nontoxic thyroid nodules which mere treated a t the Department of Surgery of Chosun University Hospital during last 6 years from January, 1973 through December, 1978. The results were as follows.
1) Age distribution was 18 to 57 years and the most frequent incidence was in the 5th decades as 34.2%.
2) The male to female ratio was 1 : 18.
3) The duration of symptom in most of cases before admission was 1 year.
4) A palpable mass was the chief complaint in all patients. Dysphagia, palpitation and headache were common complaints.
5) In thyroidal uptake of radioactive iodine, 66 cases(86.8%)were normal range, 6 cases (7.9%)were lower than normal range, 4 cases(5.3%)were higher than normal range.
6) In the radioiodine scanning, 74 cases(97.4%)were cold nodules, 2 cases(2.6%)were warm nodules.
7) Of the 66 cases of the benign disease, adenoma was the most common, about 81.5%. In the 10 cases of the malignant disease, papillary adenocarcinoma was most common, about 60%.
8) The operative technique used in most case of benign disease was complete lobectomy. Total thyroidectomy when malignant was confirmed. 9) The postoperative complications were recurrent laryengeal nerve paralysis (4), hematoma and wound infection (2), transient parathyroid deficiency (2),
