A Study on the Biochemical characteristics, susceptibility to Antimicrobial agents of the Genus proteus isolated from Kwang-Ju River.


Abstract
Using the law of Edwards-Ewing and Minitek System, it will be shown that Proteus Enterobacteria was detected in Kwangju River. When the biochemical characteristics and antibiotic susceptibility were tested for the 32 Proteus strains identified m the Enterobacteria in which lactose non-fermentation and an oxidase mi-reactive Character were discovered. The following results were obtained.
1. The isolated strains were as follows :
P. vulgaris : 3 strains. P. mirabilis : 3 strains.
P. morgami : 1 strain. P. rettgeri : 25 strains.
2. Biotype ¥³(14 strains) was found to be the most abundant type among the P. rettgeri.
3. The isolated strains were almost as predicted by the law of Edward-Ewing. The strains were individually isolated on performing the tests of H_2S, Ornithine, Urea, and Inositol on the 25 P. rettgeri. The results of the Indol reactions revealed 4(16%) negative strains, 6(24%) Rhamnose negative strains, and 3 negative strains of Phenylalanlne and one negative strain of Citrate.
4. All 2 strains were found to be susceptible to Gentamyoin and Nalidixic Acid. Three (9.4%) strains were found lo be resistance to Sulfamethoxazole and Streptomycin , seven (22%) to Cabeniciliin , 9(36%) to Chlorampheniccol : twenty-two(69%) to Ampicillin : twenty -four(75%) to Cephalothin : twenty-six(81%) to Colistin : twenty-nine(91%) to Erythromycin , thirteen(94%) to Tetracycline, and all 32 to Pepicillin. The average rate of resistance was found to be 48.2 percent.
5. Multi-resistant strains were distributed as follows :
Four-multi-resistant strains : 2 strains
Five-multi-resistant strains : 13 strains
Six-multi-resistant strains : 10 strains
Seven-multi-resistant strains : 5 strains
Eight-multi-resistant strains : 2 strains
