Attitude of Nursing Students toward Expansion of Nursing Roles


Abstract
October, 1981, a survey of 205 nursing students who were attending at the 2 departments of nursing and 2 junior nursing colleges, locate in Kwangju city about the attitude of the extended nursing was done. The results of the study were as follows:
1. The general characteristics of the respondents;
a. 37.6% of them were 21years old and 36.1% were 22years. The average was 21.7 years.
b. 52.7% of them had lived in farming and fishing villages and 68.8% had experience of students service to those area.
2. About the question which direction they to take after graduation;
83.9% wanted to work at a hospital and 16.1% wanted to work as a primary care nurse. Most of them wanted to work at a hospital.
3. The reaction about the concept of change of health care delivery system;
a. The reaction about the time of change of health care delivery system in Korea. 84.4% answered the change of health care delivery system is urgent problem.
b. The answer about the question who is the most adequate person for the primary health care provider.

c. What is the good point when nurse works as a primary care nurse.
65.4% answered they could work for the prevention of disease rather than the treatment of disease, 23.4% answered it could use the unemployed nursing personnel and 11.2% answered it could give low cost health service for the people.
d. For the question do you believe it could be possible a nurse can assess and diagnose the health problems.
68.8% answered it is possible after receiving a special training and education.
15.1% answered it is possible with a little physician¢¥s help.
14.1% answered it is possible.
2.1% believed it is difficult.
4. The attitude about performance of the extension or expansion of nursing¢¥s new roles;
a. The most difficult problems when nurse works as a primary care nurse.
43.4% answered to get the cooperation of the inhabitant of the community and 31.7% to assess and diagnose the health problems.
b. What do you expect about the role of nurse as primary health care provider?
57.1% answered it the most creative and limitless possibilities.
24.4% answered it the epoch-making change in nursing care service.
c. About the self-confidence of her own nursing capability.

low : 38.1%
d. The interest about the health education for the people.
great : 25.4%
mmoderate : 55.6%
slight : 19.0%
e. Do you find any worth to care and educate the people?
great : 25.4%
moderate : 62.9%
slight : 11.7%
f. Do you have any intention to work as a primary care nurse in a farming and fishing villages?
it well treated : 32.7%
Compare the both group between who want to be clinical nurse and primary care nurse, primary care nurse group was higher.
5. The attitude about the new nursing-education ;
a. What must be emphasized at the pre-education for the nurse to perform the development of the community is needed.
43.4% believed the capability to assess and diagnose the health problems.
b. What is the most difficult problem in the nursing education to produce the new manpower in nursing field?
The establishment of nursing philosophy. 41.5%
The change of nursing curriculum : 31.2%
The quality of faculty member. 27.3%
c. The interest about nursing research;
56.6% were very interested in it and wanted to participate with much expectations.
36.1% had much interest and expectations, but not want to participate in it.
7.3% have little interest no special expectations with it.
