A Study on the Attitudes related to Death of Nursing Students for the Dying Patient Care


Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the knowledge about death and the attitude toward it for the better effective education of the Dying Patient Care with the sample of 65 freshman, 50 sophomore, and 41 Junior nursing students enrolled the Department of Nursing, Chosun University. The following results were obtained.
1. In regard to religion : CHRISTIAN showed the highest rate as 38.5%, NO RELIGION as 38.5%, CATHOLIC as 14.7%, and BUDDHIST as 8.3%.
2. In regard to the belief of next world : Affirmative answer was 63.5% of the students and negative answer 36.5%.
3. In regard to the philosophy including clear conceptions about life and death : HAVE NOT IT NECESSARILY showed the highest rate as 43.6%, followed by 37.2% in HAVE IT FIRMLY, and HAVE NOT IT as 11.5%.
4. In regard to the feelings related to death : NATURAL PHENOMENON showed the highest rate as 37.8%, VANITY as 15.4%, ANXIETY as 9.6%, followed by 7.7% in ETERNAL REFUGE, and CUT OFF LIFE as 5.8%.
5. In regard to the question that have ever talked about death with others : Affirmative answer was 70% of the students, and negative answer 30%.
6. In regard to the question that have ever thought about your own death:DO IT SOMETIMES showed the highest rate as 75%, followed by 12.2% in DO IT FREQUENTLY, and DON¢¥T IT as 10.9%.
7. In regard to the question how your own death will occur ; CAN NOT FORESEE IT showed the highest rate as 47.4%, followed by 28.8% in OLD AGE, and ACCIDENT as 6.4%.
8. In regard to the question that you want to know it when there is no hope of the recovery of your own life. : WANT TO KNOW IT showed the highest rate as 64.7%, followed by 21.2% in AS A CIRCUMSTANCES, and DON¢¥T WANT TO KNOW IT as 14.1%.
9. In regard to the attitude when a Dying Patient wants to talk about death : HEAR IT WITH ATTENTIVE ATTIUDE showed the highest rate as 61.5%, followed by 28.2% in ENCOURAGE NOT TO GIVE UP HOPE, and EVADE AS POSSIBLE AND CHANGE TO THE ANOTHER TOPIC OF CONVERSATION as 7.1%.
10. In regard to the next important plan among the care plans of a Dying Patient : SPEND ENOUGH TIME WITH A PATIENT showed the highest rate as 43.6%, followed by 28.2% in ARRANGE TO MEET WITH A CLERGYMAN TO GIVE RELIGIOUS ASSISTANCE, and MAINTAIN THE MOST CONVENIENT PHYSICAL CONDITION as 26.3%.
11. In regard to how to do if you take care of a Dying Patient : WANT TO HELP PATIENT showed the highest rate as 76.3%, flolowed by 18.6% in WANT TO HELP PATIENT BUT DON¢¥T KNOW WHAT TO DO CONFUSEDLY, and WANT TO EVADE AS POSSIBLE as 5.1%.
12. In regard to the question informing a Dying Patient the fact that he will die : AS A CIRCUMSTANCES showed the highest rate as 60.9%, followed by 19.9% in HAVE TO INFORM IT, and HAVE TO CONCEAL IT as 10.3%.
13. In regard to how to do when a Dying Patient himself know he is hopeless. HELP TO ADMIT DEATH AND TO ARRANGE THE REMAINING LIFE showed the highest rate as 79.5%, followed by 18.6% in DENT THE FACT AND ENCOURAGE TO HAVE NEW HOPE, and DON¢¥T KNOW HOW TO DO as 1.9%.
