Many trials have been developed and established to objectively evaluate the surgical competency of residents in medical fields. But in dentistry, the implant surgical technique assessment and rating system (iSTAR) was only introduced. The aim to this study is to investigate the objective elements and the requirement for objective evaluation for surgical competence in implant dentistry. Literatures which evaluate surgical competency, have innovate observation methods or statistical validation methods were explored and summarized by experienced faculty members in Department of Periodontology, Dankook University College of Dentistry (Cheonan, Korea). Most of evaluation tools in the medical fields consist of a global rating scale and a task specific skills assessment scale. According to the development stage, variant elements of objectivity are required. Content (face) validity is required in the stage of designing assessment tools. Construct validity and reliability are also required for objectivity. Acceptability, feasibility, cost-effectiveness, predictive validity, and educational effect should be evaluated for implementation. For securing objectivity, the validation of iSTAR will be conducted using these background. Collectively, multi-center evaluation of surgical competency can be attempted.
