The Comparative Study for Effects of Various Mechanical Plaque Control Methods
¿ÀÁ¤¼÷/Oh JS
Abstract
The author conducted a comparative study on the plaque inhibitory effect of toothbrushing and of using dental floss, water qargle and water pik. For this study 60 students with good oral hygiene were divided into 6 groups.
Assessment of the amount of dental plaque was made according to the Quigely & Hein plaque index.
The data from clinical examinations were computarized and analyzed statistically.
The results were as follows.
1. The control group using only tooth brushing showed a remarkable rise of plaque index compared with the assistant oral hygiene device.
2. The plaque index was lower in the experimental groups which used tooth brushing and dental floss, or tooth brushing and water pik than in the control group using only tooth brushing. And the more the assistant device was added, the lower the plaque index was.
3. The plaque inhibitory effect showed that water pik was more effective than plaque index compared with the gargle. But there is not the remarkable difference in it.
4. Eventually, the assistant oral hygiene device could hardly be regarded as effective as tooth brushing.
