Relationships to Chronic Health Problems, Perception of Self-Esteem and Depression

Abstract
|

|
This study is attempted to submit a basic material to help me with efficient nursing management which old people perceive social-psychologically and physical, bringing about the chronic health problems, perception of self - esteem and depression.
Data collection was done from March, 15 to April, 5 1990 on 148 people of 65 years of age and over chunnam.
The instrumants were items selected from the self-esteem scale developed by Rosenberg and Beck Depression Inventory. And chronic health problems was measured by interview.
The data were analysed using mean, t-test, ANOVA, and Peorson correlation coefficient by an spss computerized program.
The results of the analysis were as follows;
1. 1) There was a large number of chronic health problems (70.9%) and skeletalmuscular system was the most in number followed by cardiovascular system, digestive system.
2) The chronic health problem related to the level of self-esteem, (t=2.40, p=0.018) and level of depression (t = -4.06, P = 0.000) showed difference statistically.
2. There was a negative relationship between self-seteem and depression. (r = -0.4351, P = 0.000)
3. 1) There were no general charcteristic variables related to self-esteem.
2) The general charcteristic variables related to the level of depression was sex, ( t = 1.96, P = 0.053) the level of education ( F = 3.68, P = 0.027), religion (F = 5.53, P = 0.003), whether they have mate or not (t = 2.99, P = 0.003), family living together concreteness (F = 2.81, P = 0.027), whether they have income of not (t = 2.13, p = 0.035) previous occupation. (F = 3.05, P = 0.03)
There was a significant relationship between chronic health problem and perception self-esteem and depression.
Therefore, for the aging, were should provide them with physical and emotional, psychological support and care in the basis of understunding of the charccter of the physical functional change.
