Sore Throat after Endotracheal Intubation in Pediatric Outpatients Undergoing Herniorrhaphy

Abstract
Background: The purpose of this study is to evaluate that the effect of lidocaine spray, dexamethasone and uncuffed tube on the postoperative sore throat after endotracheal intubation in pediatric outpatients undergoing herniorrhaphy.

Methods: Sixty children for inguinal herniorrhaphy under general anesthesia were randomly§·/§¸ divided into four groups. Group 1 recevied no treatment as a control, group 2 received topical application of 10% lidocaine 0.1 §¢ before
tracheal intubation, group 3 received intravenous dexamethasone 0.1 before tresia withacheal intubation and group 4 was intubated uncuffed endotracheal tube. The degrees of pain, sore throat and hoarseness were evaluated.

Results: Our result showed that group 2 (after 30 min), 3 (after 30 min and 24 hrs), 4 (after 30 min, 60 min and 24 hrs) had lower pain score than that of the control group.

Conclusions: Use of topical lidocaine spray and dexamethasone before tracheal intubation and uncuffed endotracheal tube can reduced postoperative sore throat in pediatric outpatients undergoing herniorrhaphy. And uncuffed tube is the most
effective in reducing postoperative sore throat.
