Background: Recently sevoflurane, an inhalant anesthetic agent was used in children without an intravenous access, but in children the autonomic system develops continuously. We can assume that the response to general anesthesia with seveflurane or enflurane is different; therefore, we compared the heart rate variability by power spectral analysis during the induction of general anesthesia -fixed respiratory rate - with enflurane or sevoflurane in children.
Methods: During induction of anesthesia with enflurane (n=21) or sevoflurane (n=19), ECG data was collected for 16 minutes respectively. Power spectral analysis was performed using a fast Fourier transformation and the area in two distinct band-widths was determined. We compared low (0.03¡0.15 Hz) and high (>0.15 Hz) frequency components of ECG signals exhibited during the induction.
Results: There was no difference in high frequency power, but there was a difference in low frequency in the intubation and maintenance period.
Conclusions: There was a difference in heart rate variability in a low frequency zone and it seemed to be due to the difference in the sympathetic vascular tone in sevoflurane and enflurane anesthesia.
