The Efficacy of Ketamine for Postoperative Pain and Recovery Characteristics in Children after Tonsillectomy

Abstract
Background: This study was designed the effect of ¥³ coadministration of ketamine 0.5§·/§¸ on the postoperative pain and recovery after tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy in children.

Method: We studied 60 patients, age 5¡­10 years, undergoing adenotonsillectomy. Patients were randomized to receive either placebo or 0.5§·-1 ketamine after induction of anesthesia. Pain and recovery characteristics scores were measured for the first 0 min, 15 min and 30 min in recovery room.

Results: Ketamine was effective in reducing pain and agitation with no additional side reactions after adenotonsillectomy.

Conclusions: Preoperative administration of ketamine is safe and effective in reducing pain and agitation after tonsillectomy in recovery room.
