Abstract
Background: Sevoflurane, a commonly used inhalational agent, is characteristic of less airway irritation, hemodynamic change, minimal adverse effect, and rapid induction and recovery. However, sevoflurane may cause more postoperative excitement than other inhalational agents. In this study, the effect of ketorolac and meperidine on postoperative excitement after WMA (volatile induction and maintenance of anesthesia) with sevoflurane in pediatric patients was evaluated.

Methods: Ninety pediatric patients were studied and divided into three groups(Control group, Ketorolac group, Meperidine group). VIMA was undertaken with sevoflurane and ketorolac (0.5 mg/kg) and meperidine (0.5 mg/kg) was administered at the time of induction. We investigated the time to extubation, postoperative excitement, postoperative recovery scores, the time of stay in PACU (postanesthetic care unit), and administration of postoperative analgesics.

Results: The incidence of postoperative excitement was lower in ketorolac and meperidine groups than in control group. Postanesthetic recovery scores were lower in ketororac and meperidine groups than in control group at arrival to PACU, but there were no difference at discharge from PACU. The time of stay in PACU was longer in ketorolac and meperidine groups than in control group.

Conclusions: Although the time of stay in PACU was delayed in 7¡8 minutes in ketorolac andmeperidine groups compared to control group, However, the administration of tetorolac and meperidine reduced the incidence of postoperative excitement after VIMA.
