A Study of the antipsychotic effects of lithium in schizophrenias

Abstract
|
|
|
In order to assess the antpsychotic effects of lithium in schizophrenia, 32 psychotic schizophrenic inpatients in Seoul National Mental Hospital was ei:aluated in a placebo-controlled three-week study that was double-blind.
Their improvement was evaluated by the modified 15-point Bunney-Hamburg Global Rating Scale.
The results were as follows;
1. 17 of 32 patients were less psychotic while receiving lithium; 9 of these patients relapsed after lithium withdrawal.
2. Patients who improved during the 3rd week on lithium could be-differentiated from nonresponders on the basis of their improvement during the first week.
3. Clinical factors such as diagnosis, prognosis and symptoms failed to predict responders from nonresponders.
