Psychologic and behavioral impairments among epileptic children treated with anticonvulsants

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine in a pediatric population the quantitative relationship of serum anticonvulcant level to the various toxic side effects;
Sixty-four children less than 18 years of age, who attended the child psychiatry department at the National Seoul Mental Hospital and the Rose Club which is one of the epileptic association) were included in the study.
These children were receiving diphenylhydantoin and phhno barbital alone or in combination for a period of at least 6 months.
Diphenylhydantoin and phenobarbital were determined in serum samples, and various clinical side effects were also evaluated.
Children with drug induced somatic changes, behavioral impairment, cognitive impairment and neurological impairment, as a group, generally had higher serum levels of diphenylhydantoin and phenobarbital than children without such side effects.
In addition, in nineteen items among thirty-two items of side effects, the groups who had side effects had significantly higher serum anticonvulcant levels than the groups without such side effects.
