Abstract

Sixty-four children less than 18 years of age, who attended child psychiatry department at the National Seoul Mental Hospital and the Rose Club one of the epileptic association in Korea, received a neuropsychiatric examination and the presence of neurotic disorder, conduct disorder, depression, psychomotor slowing and distractibility was noted. Serum folate values were estimated and the relationship between neuropsychiatric disturbances and folate disturbances explored.
Patients with neurotic disorder, conduct disorder, depression, psychomotor slowing and distractibility had significantly lower serum folic acid levels than children without these disorders. The relationship between folic acid metbolism and the neuropsychiatric disturbances is discussed in the light of these findings.
