Cognitive Deficits in Schizophrenia

Abstract
Cognitive deficits associated with schizophrenia in relation to regional brain function was highlighted in this paper. Cognitive deficits in schizophrenia are evident in some intellectual functions, attention, memory, and language. Clinical neuropsychological investigations have indicated that these deficits can be as severe as deficits observed following brain damage.
Many-studies on hemispheric specialization in schizophrenics suggest both left hemispheric dysfunction and left hemispheric overactivation?against a background of diffuse cerebral deficit.
The more productive approach will attempt to integrate the clinical data with neurobehavioral, anatomic, and physiologic data. The advances of quantitiation of regional brain physiology and anatomy will permit a systemic correlation of regional brain function with major dimension of behavior, and regional patterns of abnormal brain function in schizophrenia will be further related to the distribution of neurotransmitter systems.
