An Electroencephalographical Study on the Psychiatric patients

Abstract
The electroencephalographic records and clinical data of 630 patients were analysed and reviewed. They had undergone EEG examinations at Seoul National Mental Hospital during recent 2 years(1999. 4-2001. 3). The results were as follows : 1) Among total, 81.6% of patients were ward patients and 61.6% of patients were men. The greatest number of psychiatric patients was those in schizophrenics(41.7%), and next came epilepsy(15.9%), alcohol related disorder and drug abuse(8.9%), affective disorder(6.8%), organic brain syndrome(5.9%) and mental retardation(5.9%) etc. in order of lesser frequency. 2) The psychiatric patients producing abnormal EEG were 22.1% of the total patients. The percentage of abnormal EEGs in various psychiatric disorders were as follows ; it was highest in epilepsy(46.0%), an next came organic brain disorder(27.0%), childhood psychiatric disorder(25.8%), affective disorder(23.3%), schizophrenia(19.4%), mental retardation(17.6%), alcohol and drug abuse(10.7%). 3) In age distribution, 29.7% of total patients had the age between 31-40. And next 22.4% of patients were belonged to the age group of 21-30. 4) In abnormality of EEG, the most frequent abnormal results was minimal(33.8%), and next came mild(23.0%), moderate(22.3%), minimal to mild(10.8%) and mild to moderate(5.8%), in order of lesser frequency. In epilepsy, moderate(32.6%) and minimal(30.4%) abnormality were the most frequent, but in schizophrenia, the most frequent abnormality was minimal(33.3%) and mild(33.3%). 5) In aspects of the purpose of EEG referral, most psychiatrist referred EEG in order to rule out organicity(60.8%), to follow up abnormal EEG records(13.5%) and to assess for the seizure like attack(12.4%) at the Seoul National Mental Hospital.
