Purpose: This study was done to examine the instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), leisure satisfaction and successful aging of the elders who participated in a school for elderly people, and to identify the factors influencing successful aging.
Methods: From December 10 to December 27, 2007, 143 elders were surveyed using a structured questionnaire. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, means, Pearson correlation coefficients, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test and stepwise multiple regression.
Results: The mean score for IADL was 6.87, for leisure satisfaction, 80.28, and for successful aging, 135. IADL showed a significantly positive correlation with successful aging (r=.172, p= .040), and leisure satisfaction also showed a significantly positive correlation with successful aging (r=.757, p=.000). The predictors of successful aging for elders were leisure satisfaction, education and age, which explained 64.3% of the variance in successful aging.
Conclusion: These findings suggest a need to make arrangements for a support system for successful aging through leisure activities by developing life-long education programs to promote successful aging of elders in agricultural districts.
