Abstract
Kyushu University joined the event of advanced Internet technology between Korea and Japan on February 12, 2003. In this event, international teleconference was held between medical staffs in Hanyang University in Seoul and Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan, 600 km away.
A special broadcasting system was established to connect the two countries via Korea-Japan Cable Network, a broadband submarine optic cable. Over twenty people attended the meeting. Members included nurses, clinical engineers and doctors on both sides. We could see our counterpart very clearly on screen and talk with minimal time delay. We also used an on-line translation system and could talk by the text translated on the screen. We presented videos and slides about each hospital and endoscopicroom, followed by a question-and-answer session.
Although some medical terms could not be translated correctly by the translation system, we enjoyed communication and knew both differences and similarities in endoscopic rooms in both countries. Total discussion was about an hour.
Although two countries are so close geographically, we seldom had a chance to meet and talk on our mutual situation of daily work Many domestic meetings by nurses are held in each country, but an international event is still rare. This teleconference was the very first and exciting experience for us. However, we realized that this system was very useful to build up friendship by face-to-face conversation. We hope that we will have more chances of international communication via network.
