The Forgiveness Process of Women Who Experienced Sexual Violence

Abstract

|
Objectives: The objective of this study is to develop the practical theory on the types of forgiveness process and the results by performing an in-depth review on the forgiveness process of women who were sexually abused.
Methods: With the question “What is the forgiveness process of sexually violence women?,” the study suggested effective plans to help genuine recovery based on the insight into the process of relieving pain through forgiveness. For this purpose, a total 10 women in their 20s, 30s, and 40s who experienced serious sexual violence were targeted, and an analysis was performed by applying the grounded theory method by Strauss and Corbin (1998).
Results: According to the result, the main category of the forgiveness process was “enjoying the real freedom by holding onto the hope found in the grief”; through healthy grief, they experience forgiveness and ultimately real freedom. Through an analysis on the steps of forgiveness process, the study found that the steps were in the sequence of: “living trapped in pain,” “finding hope in grief,” “discovering meanings,” and “becoming free.” Different types of forgiveness strategy were categorized into “struggling,” “accepting the pain,” and “reproducing the meaning.” Overall, the forgiveness process of women who were sexually assaulted shares the same aspect as the recovery processes, in which an identity change occurs: a transition from a victim to a survivor to an experiencer.
Conclusions: This study is meaningful as it provides fundamental resources and practice guidelines for professional family therapy to help women who experienced sexual violence. The study also presents practical and theoretical discussion on forgiveness in the conclusion and proposal.
