The Mediating Effect of Family of Origin¡¯s Strength in the Relationship between Parental Attachment and Children's Problem Drinking

|
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of the family of origin¡¯s strength on the relationship between parental attachment and the children¡¯s problem drinking.
Methods: A survey was conducted on a total of 201 participants comprised of inpatients with problem drinking as well as men and women living in the capital region.
Results: The result of the study was as follows: First, children¡¯s drinking level showed the highest correlation with the parents¡¯ problem drinking and had a negative correlation with family of origin¡¯s strengths and attachment with the father. Family of origin¡¯s strength showed a positive correlation with attachment with the father. Second, family of origin¡¯s strength showed significant mediating effect in the relationship between parental attachment and children¡¯s drinking. It was also found that parent attachment has no direct influence on the children¡¯s drinking behavior.
Conclusions: The research yielded practical strategies for intervention programs and also contains discussions and suggestions regarding alcoholism.
