Emotion Focused Group Therapy with Couples at Risk of Divorce
Seo Mi-A

Abstract
Objectives: This study tested the effectiveness of Emotion Focused Group Therapy (EFGT) for improving depression, positive emotion, and marital intimacy among couples at risk of divorce.

Methods: A nonequivalent quasi-experimental design was used. A total of fourteen couples at risk of divorce were recruited for the study from two family support centers in the same province. Seven couples at one center served as the experimental group; the other seven, at the other center, served as the control group. The experimental group received eight sessions of Emotion Focused Therapy in a group-therapy setting. Sessions, 90-120 minutes each, were conducted twice a week. Depression, positive emotion, and marital intimacy were measured pre- and post-EFGT to test the effectiveness of the EFGT. The homogeneity of groups was analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test, and the differences between the pre- and post-tests were analyzed with the Wilcoxon Signed-Ranks test.

Results: Depression, positive emotion, and marital intimacy were significantly improved in the experimental group and showed a significant decrease in the control group.

Conclusions: EFGT was found to be effective for treating couples at risk of divorce.
