Objectives: This study was conducted to determine if the newly included SCOPE personality scale (a Five-Factor model of personality) in the PREPARE/ENRICH Customized Version (PE-CV) inventory, a customized online couples assessment, is a valid tool for premarital education and premarital/marriage counseling for Korean couples.
Methods: The researchers used both the PE-CV and NEO Personality Inventory Revised (NEO-PI-R) to assess 133 married people from 6 cities across the country in order to study the construct validity of each assessment. Using the SCOPE personality scale to assess 4,702 adult men and women from all over the country, the researchers tested its validity through confirmatory factor analysis.
Results: High internal consistency was found in the reliability of the five factors of SCOPE: Social, Change, Organized, Pleasing, and Emotionally Steady. The fit indices of the model for the confirmatory factor analysis were acceptable, yet the regression coefficients of nine items were smaller than .3. Convergent validity was also demonstrated; each of the five factors from one inventory showed a strong correlation to the corresponding factor from the other inventory, with a Pearson coefficient ranging from .581 to .644.
Conclusions: The analysis suggests that the SCOPE is a good tool for its purposes, though further research and understanding of its limits are needed.
