Perception, Similarity, and Application of Relationship Standards on Partner Satisfaction
Park Jeong-Yun

Abstract
Objectives: This study examined the effects that the perception, similarity, and application of relationship standards have on partner satisfaction. It also explored ways of strengthening the marital relationship at different points along the family life cycle.

Methods: The researcher surveyed 570 couples in the Seoul and metropolitan areas, focusing on the perception, similarity, and application of relationship standards, as well as on partner satisfaction. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS 18.0.

Results: Significant differences were found in the sub-factors of relationship beliefs, in partner satisfaction, and in partner positive behaviors, relative to the timing of the family life cycle. Relevant variables were distinguished for newly married couples (e.g., education, power-control standards, etc.), couples with preschool-aged children (e.g., boundary perception, relationship-investment standards, etc.) and couples with school-aged children (e.g., marital type, etc.).
Conclusions: Family life cycle exerts a significant effect on couples¡¯ perceptions, similarities, application of relationship standards, and partner behaviors. Relationship standards, understood within the context of the family life cycle, should be addressed during couple counseling.
