Abstract
Objectives: This study investigated the effect of individual, family, and neighborhood factors on depression among community-dwelling elders.

Methods: Data from the 2012 Community Health Survey of 2,854 residents in the city of Busan, S. Korea, aged 65 years and older, were analyzed as individual-level data. Local governments¡¯ administrative statistics were analyzed as neighborhood-level data (N=16). A hierarchical linear model (HLM) was used for the analysis.

Results: Among individual factors, age, poverty, and self-rated health had significant effects on depression. Among family factors, marital status (but not family type) showed a significant impact on depression. Neighborhood factors, including income and reliance on welfare, explained 6.3% of the log odds ratio of depression.

Conclusions: Results suggest that individual, family, and neighborhood factors are meaningful dimensions in which to intervene to treat depression among community dwelling elders.
