A National Qualification System for Family Counselors in Korea

Abstract

|
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore the need for a national qualification system for family counselors in Korea, and to offer possible regulations.
Methods: The authors reviewed license/certification regulations in both Korea and in the U.S.A., as well as government policies, services, and laws relevant to family counseling.
Results: The demand for qualified family counselors has increased because of the expansion of governmental family services, including those for multicultural families, family violence and sexual violence, the Healthy Family Project, and more. A national qualification system would help to reduce the confusion in the community by establishing a “qualified” family counseling certificate. Taking into account the current civil qualification systems, as well as the national youth counselor qualification system, the authors suggested the use of a national qualification model for family counselors.
Conclusions: For a national qualification system of family counselors in Korea to be successfully implemented, further civil and governmental collaborative efforts are needed.
