Abstract

Objectives: This study explored the use of marital therapy for a middle-aged couple who were struggling with the wife¡¯s intense suspicions about infidelity. The therapist used a bio-psycho-social, vulnerability-stress model to explore the pathogenesis of the delusional jealousy. For solving conflicts and promoting the marital relationship, the therapist used an MRI approach.
Method: Eight 180-minute sessions were conducted with the couple. The researcher undertook a process-and-change analysis of the transcript and conducted qualitative post-session interviews with the participants. Quantitative analysis relied on the Kansas Marital Satisfaction Scale to identify before-and-after differences of counseling.
Results: The frequency and severity of the wives¡¯ delusions of infidelity were significantly reduced by changing the communication pattern and coping skills of the husband. The couple¡¯s satisfaction improved meaningfully.
Conclusions: MRI-based marital therapy and the vulnerability-stress model effectively reduced symptoms and increased marital satisfaction in a couple with a wife who had a delusion of infidelity.
