Therapeutic Types of Clinical Communications
Kim Byoung-Hoon

Abstract
Objective: This paper drew on the author¡¯s supervisory work with therapists and personal clinical work experiences to propose an instrumental grid for defining clinically effective communication.

Methods: The grid was developed with two horizontal categories (function and orientation) and four vertical categories (knowledge, body, impulse, and feelings). Interactions were classified as dysfunctional or congruent and passive or active.

Results: Sixteen types of communication subcategories were created, eight dysfunctional and eight functional. The eight dysfunctional subcategories included passive dysfunctional knowledge, active dysfunctional knowledge, passive dysfunctional body, active dysfunctional body, passive dysfunctional impulse, active dysfunctional impulse, passive dysfunctional feeling, and active dysfunctional feeling. The eight functional categories included congruent passive knowledge, congruent active knowledge, congruent passive body, congruent active body, congruent passive impulse, congruent active impulse, congruent passive feeling, and congruent active feeling.

Conclusions: An objective value for the grid could not be established, and validity and reliability could not be determined, because the grid has not yet been standardized.
