Narrative Therapy Group Counseling for Older Adults with Depression
Ko Jung-Eun

Abstract
Objectives: This study investigated the effectiveness of narrative therapy for reducing depressive symptoms and enhancing positive identities in a therapy group for older adults.

Methods: The study was conducted over five group sessions, totaling 100 hours, of six older adults who lived alone and were experiencing depression. All sessions were audio-recorded with participants¡¯ consent, and transcripts were analyzed using content analysis.

Results: Throughout the sessions, participants attempted to re-interpret meanings from their past and re-author their own life stories with preferred stories. In addition, participants adopted new positive identities in three areas: family, social relations, and achievements. First, participants acknowledged themselves as mothers who do their best for their children, have strong living skills, are able to express their feelings, and pray for their family. Second, participants built new friendships among group members. Third, the older adults recognized themselves as survivors who overcame tough situations and chose to respect the choices they had made. Through the process of creating alternative stories, change in participants¡¯ identities was possible.

Conclusions: Narrative therapy can positively contribute to older adults¡¯ identity changes. Results from this study support the contention that narrative therapy is effective for reducing older adults¡¯ depression.
