Parent-Child Closeness and Adolescent Anxiety in Families with Marital Conflict
Park Woo-Chul

Abstract
Objectives: This study used Bowen family systems theory and a strength-based approach to conceptualize differences in adolescent anxiety in families with marital conflict.

Methods: Using nationally representative data from the Korean Youth Panel Survey, the researcher analyzed information from 398 adolescents (230 males and 168 females) who reported conflict between their parents. An analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to examine the differences in the anxiety of parent-child closeness types, controlling for gender.
Results: There was a significant difference in the level of anxiety between adolescents in the close-to-both-parents type group and those in the close-to-neither-parent type group. Adolescents who were close to both parents reported a significantly higher level of anxiety than those who were close to neither of their parents.

Conclusions: Family therapists should carefully consider the adjustment of adolescents in therapy who are close to both parents in marital discord.
