Development and Validation of Family Happiness Index
Cho Eun-Suk

Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to develop a Family Happiness Index. A measure of a family¡¯s subjective well-being, the index was designed to be used primarily in the Healthy Family Support Center.

Methods: The researcher developed the index as a composition of two measures: family affect and satisfaction of family life. Preliminary index items were selected through reference to the previous literature and were refined during the pilot study through professional consultations. The final items were selected through an internet survey (N=379), using each item¡¯s conceptual importance and its correlation with two reference items.

Results: The index developed as two scales: the Family Affect Scale (eight items) and the Family Life Satisfaction Scale (20 items). Reliability (Chronbach¡¯s alpha) and validity test results were satisfactory.

Conclusions: As one of the first measurements of family happiness, this index has several limitations; however, it should stimulate further discussions regarding the measurement of family happiness.
