Decentering and Forgiveness in Marital Conflict and Adjustment
Gwak Min-Ha

Jeon Hye-Seong
Abstract
Objectives: This study explored the influence of marital conflict on marital adjustment and, more specifically, the effect of decentering and forgiveness on the relationship between marital conflict and marital adjustment.

Method: The researchers used a convenience sample of 298 married men and women (ranging in age between 20-60) who lived in Seoul or Gyeonggi-do province. The researchers employed frequency analysis, t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis.

Results: The researchers found that marital conflict had a considerable influence on marital adjustment and that forgiveness had a moderating effect on this influence. Decentering could not be verified as a moderating factor.
Conclusions: Forgiveness functions as a buffer for the negative impact of marital conflict on marital adjustment. Although decentering didn¡¯t have a moderating effect, it did have a positive effect on marital relationship enrichment.
