Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of family communication and university environment on suicidal thoughts among university students, over and above the effects of personal predictors.

Methods: This study examined the effects of personal and environmental predictors using hierarchical regression analysis. In the first model, socio-demographic characteristics predicted suicidal thoughts. In the second model, depression, anxiety, and self-efficacy as personal predictors were added to the first model. Finally, family communication―open communication and problem communication―and university environment as environmental predictors were added to the second model. The data of 307 university students from Daegu and Gyeongbuk area were analyzed.

Results: The results indicated that open communication, problem communication, and university environment had significant effects on suicidal thoughts, controlling for the socio-demographic characteristics and personal predictors.

Conclusions: These results imply that intervention for environments including family and university needs to be emphasized in planning prevention for suicide among university students.
