Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) of Values of Cohabitation
Lee Hee-Yun

Park Jeong-Yun
Abstract
Objectives: This study explored the possibility of cohabitation as one of the diverse family lifestyles in Korea. The researchers analyzed values of cohabitation expressed by individuals who are cohabitating and attempted to deepen understandings about the life of cohabiting families.

Methods: Given the specificity of the study population and the paucity of research in this area in Korea, the Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) method was utilized. Ten male & female cohabiters were interviewed in depth. A structured team and an auditor were used to guard against researcher bias.

Results: The participants defined cohabitation as the due course of love. The prerequisite of cohabitation was found to be a loving relationship and financial capability to maintain living standards. The participants chose to live together for the following reasons: their desire to be with their partner, a reduction of financial burden, psychological factors, and the convenience for dating.

Conclusions: This study extended the current research on cohabitation in Korea. To increase transferability, future studies need to use more diverse samples in terms of factors such as age and former marital experience.
