Counseling with Ethical Issues: A Phenomenological Study of Family Counselor's Experiences

Abstract
Objectives: This qualitative study explored the counseling experience of family counselors dealing with ethical issues. Eight family counselors with a Korean Association of Family Therapy ¡°First-Class¡± license participated.

Methods: The researchers utilized Giorgi's phenomenological methodology to delve into the essence of the the counselors¡¯ experience with ethical issues. Each participant was interviewed once for at least 60 minutes. The interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and then underwent four levels of analysis.

Results: The researchers distinguished 45 textures, 18 structures, and five essences within the experience of counselors dealing with ethical issues. The five essences included a) cases whereby the counselor experienced ethical issues; b) family counselors¡¯ experiences when ethical issues occur; c) family counselors¡¯ coping with ethical issues d) family counselor¡¯s experiences in dealing with ethical issues; and e) family counselor's own ethical values.

Conclusions: The study demonstrates the need to address ethical issues in the family counseling more fully, as well as the necessity of providing skills that assist in counseling.
