Relationship Trauma Related to Insecure Attachment: A Collaborative Autoethnography
Moon Hye-Ri

Kim Myeong-Chan
Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to describe and understand the individual experiences of the researcher, who, as a result of insecure attachment with parents and an associated relationship trauma, has functioned as a good child in the family.

Methods: A collaborative autoethnography, a form of self-study, was used to investigate and analyze the researcher¡¯s personal experiences within a socio-cultural context. Meanings were developed by drawing on attachment theory, relational trauma, and Object Relations theory.

Results: The researcher came to the following conclusions: First, I was an unwanted baby and I didn`t feel the value of my self-existence because of the failure of emotional & relational attunement with my parents. Second, I acted as a good child to receive love and recognition. Third, I knew I was worthy of myself even if I did not act as a good child and I felt emptiness in this process.

Conclusions: Counseling theory, colleagues, my personal analysis counselor, and my co-researcher have become good self-objects and the safe environment for repeated emotions. I realized that I can exist as I am aware of my value. Based on these results, it is possible to deeply understand the relational trauma experienced by insecure attachment and to provide family therapy intervention methods.
