The Influence of Mindfulness and Locus of Control on Couples¡¯ Intimacy: Applying the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model
Jeong Bock-Ja

Cho Sung-Hee
Abstract
Objectives: This study explored the relationships among locus of control, mindfulness, and marital intimacy, using for the analysis the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM).

Methods: The subjects included 182 married couples living in Seoul and Gyonggi-do. Actor effect and partner effect were applied to the relationship modeling among locus of control, mindfulness, and marital intimacy.

Results: There were five major results from the study: 1) People who take ownership and responsibility for their problems can grow and change psychologically. 2) The higher the level of mindfulness, the higher the level of perceived marital intimacy. 3) Only husbands displayed high correlations between mindfulness and locus of control. 4) The impact of locus of control on marital intimacy is more sensitive for the actor than the partner. 5) Mindfulness indirectly contributes to marital intimacy through the mediating effects of the husbands¡¯ locus of control.

Conclusions: Marital intimacy relies on the couple¡¯s attitudes, the awareness of themselves, the awareness of their relationship with their spouses, their level of self acceptance, and their level of acceptance of the relationship. This study indicates that additional education or mindfulness training is needed to develop marital intimacy.
