Objectives: This mixed methods research study explored the use of Roberts¡¯ Seven Stage Crisis Intervention Model and Structural Family Therapy intervention strategies for a family bereaved by suicide.
Methods: Ten 180-minute sessions were conducted with a family bereaved by suicide. Qualitative evaluation included a process-and-change analysis of the transcripts of the sessions and analysis of post-session interviews with the participants. Quantitative evaluation included pre- and post-test administration of CES-D and The Reasons for Living Inventory.
Results: Crisis intervention and family counseling succeeded in lowering the severity of the family¡¯s trauma and restructuring the family relationships. After the counseling, levels of depression were lower and the Reasons-for-Living-Inventory scores were higher.
Conclusions: Roberts¡¯ Crisis Intervention Model and Structural Family Therapy were both effective in assisting a family bereaved by suicide to cope and change.
