Abstract

Objectives: This study explored the post-traumatic experiences of mothers who lost their children in an accident.
Methods: Grounded Theory (Strauss & Corbin, 1998) was used in analyzing data from eight mothers who lost their children more than 3 years ago.
Results: The researchers derived 71 concepts, 33 subcategories, and 13 categories. Analysis resulted in the identification of four stages: pain, transition/ acceptance, regulation/growth, and reconsolidation. The core category was ¡°thinking of their children and standing again.¡± Using typological analysis, the researchers derived two pursuits, ¡°pursuit of real life¡± and ¡°pursuit of meaning,¡± with four subtypes: active and passive pursuits of reality, and active and passive pursuits of meaning.
Conclusions: The experiences of resilience among mothers who lost their children in an accident can be useful for family counselors and therapists.
