Objectives: The study was designed to carefully review the practice of therapeutic dialog in solution focused brief therapy (SFBT).
Methods: A microanalysis was carried out of a SFBT case conducted by Insoo Kim Berg, focusing on how the dialogue was structured, constructed, and maintained. Attention was also brought to the role of the therapist.
Results: The strategies of the therapist were divided into two main categories. First, the therapist frequently used solution-focused questions without responding to the clients¡¯ heavy complaints. Second, the therapist helped the clients save face through her use of solution-focused techniques, such as paraphrasing.
Conclusions: Insoo Kim Berg used active but respectful approaches to guide the conversation toward solution talk. This can inspire counselors to be intentional and sensitive in their choice of questions and other elements of the treatment process.
